The Modikwa platinum mine has halted production after six workers en route to work were killed when unknown attackers threw a petrol bomb at the bus in which they were traveling in Burgerfort in Limpopo.

It is believed that unhappiness about jobs, salaries and conflict among mining unions are at the heart of this tragedy. Six men died on the scene with others jumping through windows of the burning bus. More than 40 others were being treated at local hospitals.

An amount of half a million Rand is offered by the SA Police for any information on the incident which could lead to an arrests. A high level team of investigators had been assigned to the case.

Recently, the area of Burgersfort has been plagued by protests during which tires were burnt and a general feeling of unhappiness among rural residents.
