TWO grade 9 learners from Duvha Combined School at Emalahleni who were found guilty of assaulting a fellow learner were expelled from the school.
The Mpumalanga Department of Education said it has considered the recommendations of the School Governing Body. The learner was assaulted in February.
The department said the because the learners fell within the compulsory attendance age, the circuit manager has been tasked to enroll them in another school and to closely monitor their conduct.
“This decision is in keeping to the dictates of the South African Schools Act number 84 of 1996 as amended. Section  9 ( 5) of the Act states that” said the department.
“If a learner who is subject to compulsory attendance in terms of the section is expelled from a public school, the head of the department must make an alternative arrangement for his or her placement at a public school”.
The department said the decision will send a clear message that bullying will not be tolerated in schools.
