Landowners and farmers to watch Fire Danger Index
THE fire season is upon us and during the past weekend Working on Fire (WoF) fire fighters in Mpumalanga had to battle 18 fires, mostly in the Highveld region. During June and July, WoF recorded 92 fires throughout the province, with an estimation of close to 4000 hectares of land destroyed.
“These fires mostly raged on privately owned land, it is therefore difficult to establish the causes,” said WoF provincial spokesperson Lebogang Maseko. The areas include Ermelo, Breyten, Piet Retief and Dullstroom. By yesterday afternoon, fires were still raging in Piet Retief and Dullstroom.
WoF fire fighters are continuing to work with the Msukaligwa Fire and Rescue Service in Ermelo, to help minimise fire risks in the area. “Our department is having a challenging fire season, especially as we have entered the windy August season,” said Fire Chief Jaco Johnstone.
