The DA welcomes the Malelane Magistrates Court’s decision to deny bail to a fake doctor who stands accused of performing illegal abortions.
Abubakari Kaweesa who calls himself “Dr J Rajab” was arrested on 10 October in a joint operation with the Medicines Control Council, the Hawks and the Health Professions Council of South Africa (HPCSA). He was denied bail and case was postponed to 18 October. He re-appeared in court today.
Kaweesa is alleged to have confirmed to an undercover agent that he does pregnancy terminations for an amount of R700.
Although the South African Constitution guarantees women the right to access health care, including reproductive health care along with the right to make decisions concerning reproduction, many women turn to fake doctors to terminate pregnancies due to affordability, confidentiality and fear of judgment.
These fake doctors are not regulated and their actions often result in injuries and even death.
The arrest of Kaweesa should send a strong message to all those performing illegal abortions that their conduct will not be tolerated.
The DA calls on Health MEC, Gillion Mashego to ensure that all healthcare professionals that deal with women’s reproduction matters are professional and properly trained so that women don’t feel the need to find fake doctors.
He has appeared in the Tonga Court today. Dex Sibiya from NewsHorn is on the scene and will report on the outcome.
