THE Mpumalanga Department of Education has welcomed the decision to suspend the 19- year- old grade 11 learner who had been found guilty of assaulting a school’s bus driver. The School Governing Body of Hoërskool Oosterland has found the learner guilty of transgressing the school code of conduct.
This outcome follows a disciplinary hearing conducted by the School Governing Body where a decision to suspend the learner for seven days was taken while the school was reportedly processing its recommendations to the head of the department for consideration. The department said it will monitor the process very closely and will await the recommendations from the SGB.
MEC Sibusiso Malaza said he was horrified that a learner could put the lives of all the passengers in the bus in such a shocking manner. “The fact that the learner is seen attacking the driver while the bus was in motion shows a total disregard for the lives of the other innocent learners who enter to get home safely. The circumstances that triggered this incident are yet to be investigated by the department,” said Malaza. “One cannot imagine that a learner can conduct himself in such a horrible manner. It’s really so unfortunate and heartbreaking. There is nothing that can justify violent conduct and disregard the safety of other learners. This would have caused a major accident.”
A case of assault was opened with the police and investigations were underway.
