THE Xitsonga Writers and Language Development Association is compiling a non-fiction book about the history of the Bushbuckridge area.
The group comprising professional writers and researchers from Mkhuhlu in Bushbuckridge said the aim of the project was to preserve the history of Bushbuckridge and the Xitsonga language.
The group’s founder, Boshoff Nkuna, said the book would be written in Xistonga because it was the language mostly spoken by the natives of that area.
“We want to document Bushbuckridge and expose it to the world because it has never been exposed in a literal form. We want people from across the country and even abroad to know about our area. By doing this we are also making sure that our culture, tradition, and lifestyle are preserved,” said Nkuna.
He said another aim of starting the group and writing the book was to make sure that the current and future generation in the area knew everything about it.
A member of the group, Tshepo Mthimkhulu, told NEWSHORN that the team consisted of those who already published their books as well as first-time writers.
“Our slogan is ‘Hi hluvukisa ririmi’(loosely translated as we are developing the language). Some of the topics the book will cover include sports, media, religion, education, and entertainment. So far the team is getting what it wants in terms of gathering the information even though some people are reluctant to give us information,” said Mthimkhulu.
He did not say when exactly the book will be published.
