Police have arrested a 40-year-old man for armed robbery and possession of the suspected stolen property in White River yesterday. The arrest came after police responded  to a complaint of an armed robbery along the White River/Hazyview Road in which a minibus transporting cigarettes was robbed.

Police said the driver and his crew noticed a blue Volkswagen Polo and a silver Toyota Hilux bakkie with an unknown number of occupants who suddenly pointed firearms at them, forcing the driver to stop.“The driver of the minibus pulled off the road and they were robbed  of several cigarette cartons, which were then loaded onto the Hilux.

The suspects fled the scene and a manhunt was launched by the police and a private security firm and the bakkie and the stolen goods were recovered,” said Mpumalanga police spokesperson Coll Mtsholi Bhembe. One suspect who was found inside the vehicle was immediately arrested and is expected to appear at the White River Magistrate’s Court today, facing  charges of armed robbery and possession of a suspected stolen property.

Police continue to search for the other suspects. Anyone with information that may assist in the investigation is urged to contact Warrant Officer Grobbie Grobler at 082 455 6591 or call the SAPS Crime Stop number 08600 10111.
