A suspected illegal miner who was arrested in Secunda after he was allegedly found in possession of illegal firearms and ammunition will appear in court on February 4.

Jufe Sepere, 30, appeared briefly yesterday in the Secunda Magistrate’s Court, where he was denied bail.

The case has been postponed to allow the police to conduct further investigations.

“Sepere was arrested on Friday after he was spotted walking on the road with his friend. When they saw the police his friend ran away,” said Mpumalanga police spokesperson Colonel Mtsholi Bhembe.

Bhembe said it suspected that Sepere is also involved in the illegal mining activities that are taking place in the area.

“Inside the bag, there were two R4 rifles with serial numbers filed off, two magazines, 57 rounds of ammunition, a couple of tins of fish believed to be part of their staple diet when underground doing illegal mining,” said Bhembe.

Police are currently looking for the other man who ran away. Anyone with information may contact Capt Victor Dibakoane at 079 2680 040 or the SAPS Crime Stop number, 08600 10111.
