A 30-year-old man known as Evans Maphanga was found dead at Shatleng sports ground on Sunday morning, it is alleged that he was caught red handed stealing a flat screen television in a certain house in Marite near Hazyview.

According to an eye witness, who wanted to remain anonymous, Maphanga has been terrorising the community of Marite for a while by stealing, until his luck ran out on Sunday when he was caught trying to steal a flat screen.

“The owners of the house called their neighbours and they beat him and put a tyre around him. They wanted to burn him but realised that he was already dead due to the bruises received from the beating. He was then left at an open field with a tyre around his waist.” said the anomymous witness.

Maphanga was beaten with sticks and stones and it took at least 3 hours before he lost his life. People are uncertain whether he was killed at the sports ground or if his body was just dumped there with the 5 litres of petrol that was to be used to set him alight.

A communication officer at Calcutta Police Station, Captain Fakude, has confirmed that a case of murder has been opened and police are asking members of the public, with any information that can lead to arrest of the killers of Mokoena to come forward.

He also condemned members of the community taking law into their own hands because they are committing a crime, therefore whenever they catch a criminal they must call the police first.
