Mozambique’s government plans to turn the old part of the port of Maputo into a “free zone” to receive cruise ships, by installing the appropriate equipment to deal with ocean liners, it announced on Tuesday.

The minister of culture and tourism, Silva Dunduro, said that the project includes setting up cultural ventures for tourists, namely an art gallery and a club that is to host jazz sessions and other cultural events.

“We want to attract more organised tourism, a tourism which is focused on results, as in any other part of the world,” said Silva Dunduro.

Elsewhere, the authorities are also planning to make improvements and will soon proceed with the reclassification of Barra and Tofo beaches in the southern province of Inhambane. The initiative will involve stopping unplanned construction at both sites, Dunduro added.
