The Democratic Alliance (DA) in Mpumalanga claims that provincial municipalities are owed nearly R 9 billion due to poor debt collection.

The DA says this is according to the section 71 report of the Municipal Finance Management Act.

The DA says Lekwa and Dipaleseng local municipalities are collecting less than 60% of the revenue needed to deliver services. DA leader in Mpumalanga James Masango says these municipalities fail to collect revenue from households and government departments.

“Municipalities like Dipaleseng and Lekwa are unable to collect more than 50% of revenue, it becomes a problem because you must just remember those municipalities survive by revenue, if they cannot collect revenue then it means they cannot bring service delivery to the people and they cannot pay employees.”
