Naas community catches their own criminals

The business hub of Naas where a robber met his match.

The efforts of residents from a local community to fight crime have seen to two law offenders owning up to their crime. Naas residents apprehended the two suspects after they robbed a business.

The suspects allegedly entered a shop, held up the shopkeeper with a firearm and demanded money. Taking an undisclosed amount of cash and recharge vouchers, they fled the scene. When the shopkeeper screamed for help shortly after the suspects fled, the community responded and gave chase until they caught the fleeing perpetrators. The police were summoned to the scene and the suspects were arrested.

Sibusiso Mathonsi (26) and Walter Maziba (23) have already appeared in the Nkomazi magistrate’s court on charges of robbery and possession of an unlicensed firearm. The case has been postponed until later this month.

Tonga police station commander Brig Velisiwe Mdaka thanked the community members who played a crucial role in the apprehension of the suspects.
