Nine people were burnt beyond recognition in a head-on collision between a Toyota Avanza and a Light Delivery Vehicle (LDV) which occurred this morning on the R23 Road between Standerton and Balfour. The nine individuals who were allegedly from KwaZulu Natal were traveling to Gauteng.

One person died en route to hospital while two other individuals sustained critical injuries and are receiving medical attention at a nearby hospital. The cause of the accident is unclear but it is under investigation.

Mpumalanga Community Safety, Security and Liaison MEC, Pat Ngomane is deeply shocked by the incident saying that the roads are becoming killing fields due to the high volume of collisions. Ngomane has once more pleaded with motorists to ensure that their actions contribute towards preserving lives at all times when they are behind the steering wheel.

Ngomane has sent his heartfelt condolences to the affected families and also wished those who were injured a speedy recovery.
