Zimbabwe’s Zanu-PF secretary for information and publicity in South Africa, Morelife Mapeture says the resignation of Robert Mugabe as Zimbabwean president should serve as a lesson to other leaders on the continent.

Zimbabwe is awaiting the return of Emmerson Mnangagwa, who is former president Robert Mugabe’s right-hand man.

Mnangagwa will be sworn in as interim president on Wednesday afternoon after Mugabe stepped down on Tuesday.

Mugabe fired Mnangagwa on November 6, triggering a military take-over.

Mapeture says it seems like Comrade Mugabe became so drunk with power and was not listening to the voices that were coming from the people even though the voices were loud and clear.

He says: “I think it’s advice to all the African presidents that when people are speaking that power is invested in people and not you. We voted for you and you didn’t tell us that you are the president, we voted for you.”

“We voted for you and we can equally remove you the same way Comrade Mugabe was removed. He was such a powerful and iconic leader but look at where he is now. It’s quite shameful,” says Mapeture.
