One of the most feared Mpumalanga serial rapists has briefly appeared in the Nkomazi Magistrates Court and was remanded in custody pending his next court appearance on March 15.
It is alleged that the man committed a series of rapes in Nkomazi and surrounding areas. He is facing charges which include 31 cases of rape, house robberies as well as possession of an unlicensed firearm and ammunition. He was arrested soon after being positively linked to some of the cases through DNA tests matching him to most of the rape cases.
Meanwhile, a 53-year-old man accused of raping two children aged 10 and 11 is expected to appear in court soon to also face multiple rape charges. He allegedly raped the two minors in separate incidents. Both victims who are neighbours to the suspect were going to a nearby shop when he lured them into his house and raped them. After he was arrested last month, he was granted bail but he kept in custody to save him from the angry community members who were against with his release.
General Mondli Zuma has commended the police for a job well done. “I would like to congratulate police on the arrest of the suspects. As we are here to serve and protect our people we will make sure of that now and again. We cannot just let people do as they please in communities, we will arrest all those that do not adhere to laws,” he said.
Zuma has also urged SAPS members and other law authorities to ensure the suspects get sentences that they deserve.
