Six people accused of murdering a farmer are expected to appear in the Evander Magistrate’s Court on charges of murder, house robbery, unlawful possession of firearms and ammunition, as well as possession of stolen property. The suspects, five men and a woman were arrested after being positively linked to the murder of the elderly farmer in Charl Cilliers, near Secunda in Mpumalanga.
“The suspects were traced and taken into custody at their respective hideouts in Embalenhle and Emzinoni after police acted swiftly on information received regarding their whereabouts.
“On February 16 at approximately 22:30, a 73-year-old man and his family were watching television when three armed men stormed into their house ,” said Mpumalanga police spokesperson Sergeant Gerald Sedibe. He said the suspects demanded keys to the safe and took the elderly man to the bedroom where the safe was mounted and shot him. The suspects opened the safe, took three firearms, a .287 magnum revolver, a .306 hunting rifle a .303 rifle as well as other items such as jewellery, a TV set, and money.
They fled the scene in the family’s white Ford Ranger which was parked outside. They also reportedly shot and killed two dogs which were in the house before fleeing.
During the arrest, the five men were found in possession of some of the items which were robbed from the victims, while the woman was found in possession of the cellphone of the victim. The family vehicle used by the suspects to flee the scene was reportedly found burnt at Emzinoni.
The Provincial Commissioner of the police in Mpumalanga, Lt Genl Mondli Zuma applauded the for assisting the police in finding the perpetrators.
